With the mental health provider shortage — 47% of Americans live in a mental health workforce shortage area — Mentavi Health saw an opportunity to help reduce the barriers to access. The company has helped more than 180,000 people access attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other mental health diagnoses and treatment paths. Originally, the company focused on patients with ADHD, but Mentavi Health gradually broadened its services to those seeking insights around their general mental wellness.
“It was in response to patient needs. There are so many more conditions than ADHD,” says Keith Brophy, Chief Executive Officer of Mentavi Health. “Mental health issues often occur as comorbidities, with a person having more than one mental health condition that impacts them. We gradually expanded our diagnosis and treatment process to cover a broader approach of looking at an individual to lead them to the best path.”
Mentavi Health is an online platform and service that helps patients get a diagnosis and treatment for their mental health conditions. Its providers look at the whole picture and overall mental wellness, and streamline many of the barriers of access to traditional mental health care, which can involve extensive wait times for diagnosis.
That access is what sets the company apart. It recently released its Mentavi Mental Wellness Snapshot, a way for people to monitor their mental wellness over time and proactively address any challenges as they develop. The snapshot is a 15-minute self-guided assessment that offers immediate insight into someone’s mental well-being.
“You don’t have to wait in line. You can get initial answers in 15 minutes. People need insights to understand what they’re feeling,” says Corey Hart, Director of Service Development.
The Mentavi Mental Wellness Snapshot combines 15 clinically validated screeners to provide an instant report with clear insights and an overall Mentavi wellness score.
Armed with this additional information, patients can then take the full diagnostic test, if warranted, which is reviewed by a licensed psychologist and returned within a few days.
“Instead of waiting weeks to months to see someone, you get answers in 3-5 days,” Corey says. “You can move on the treatment really quickly.”
Both tests can be taken by any individual, but as Corey points out, Mentavi Health also offers support for employers and organizations. Employers can use the Mentavi Mental Wellness Snapshot to measure wellness programs, look for burnout, and see what’s working and what isn’t on different teams, Corey says.
With 83% of employees struggling with work-related stress on a daily basis and 77% of employers reporting an increase in mental health needs of their workforce, it’s clear that mental wellness is top of mind — and necessary — for both parties.
“Mentavi Health and the snapshot is a great partner and tool to understand what teams need,” Corey says. “And if companies do have mental wellness programs or EAPs, we can help measure its effectiveness.”
Rooted in Grand Rapids
Born in Western Michigan, originally as ADHD Online, Mentavi Health is supported by local teams and local venture capitalists — and is looking forward to being supported by local employers. The Right Place, an economic development organization that supports 8 counties in West Michigan, helps businesses like Mentavi Health to grow and expand within the greater Grand Rapids region. The city is home to the Medical Mile, attracting medical professionals from around the world—making it a great place for a healthcare startup to grow.
“There’s no shortage of talent and innovation in the area, making it a great place to be headquartered,” Keith says. “Our team is hybrid, with the majority local to Western Michigan.”
Mentavi Health is currently hiring — and looking to grow its provider network. As they look to 2025, the company is looking to partner with employers and understand all of the use cases for its Mental Wellness Snapshot.
